Whispers of ancient magic linger here at Fairy Castle. This isn’t just any hilltop. It’s the summit of Two Rock Mountain. A place steeped in history and legend. Right before you stands a cairn a stone mound marking a passage tomb. It’s the easternmost of a chain of such tombs stretching across the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains.

Fairy Castle is more than just a pretty name. It’s a tangible link to Ireland’s Neolithic past. The cairn itself is impressive. It’s 25 metres across and 2 metres high. It’s a circular structure of granite and quartz blocks hidden beneath turf and vegetation. This is the remains of a passage tomb. Archaeologists believe a small burial chamber lies within. Sadly the entrance collapsed long ago. It was once described as a cave. The tomb has never been fully excavated. Imagine the secrets it holds.

Now picture this. The summit of Fairy Castle offers breathtaking views. From here you can see far and wide. Much of the Dublin area is visible. On a clear day you can even spot Bray Head Killiney Hill and the Wicklow Mountains. The views are as spectacular as the history. The mountain’s name Two Rock comes from two granite tors near the summit.

But Fairy Castle’s story goes beyond its Neolithic origins. Legend connects it to Red Hugh O’Donnell. This Irish chieftain escaped from Dublin Castle in the late 16th century. He used Two Rock Mountain as a refuge. He sought shelter with Felim O’Toole. His escape became a symbol of Irish resistance. It is said that during his harrowing journey over the freezing mountains Red Hugh suffered frostbite. He lost a toe on each foot. His story intertwines with the ancient stones.

This seemingly ordinary cairn is a portal to a fascinating past. It’s a silent witness to millennia of history. From Neolithic rituals to a daring escape. Fairy Castle invites us to reflect on Ireland’s rich and complex heritage. It reminds us of the stories woven into the very landscape. Remember this place. Remember its history. Remember its magic.
