Did you know Fairview Park wasn’t always known by that name? Today we explore this green space. It is a place where community and recreation meet.

Fairview Park offers many features. There are baseball and softball fields for sports enthusiasts. Basketball and tennis courts provide spaces for friendly competition. For those who enjoy a slower pace, trails wind through the park. They offer scenic views and a connection with nature.

Fairview Park also caters to families. Playgrounds offer fun for children of different age groups. Picnic areas invite gatherings. Pavilions are available for rental for special occasions.

But there’s more than just recreation here. Fairview Park includes a historical cemetery site. This offers a glimpse into the past. It connects us to the stories of those who came before.

The park officially became Fairview Park in 1949. This was named for the fair view over the Metroparks. Before that, residents urged the mayor to establish a post office. They discovered another Fairview, Ohio already existed.

The park’s story began much earlier. In the late 1700s General Moses Cleveland surveyed the land. He divided it into ranges and townships. What we now know as Fairview Park was part of Township Number 7 Range 14.

In 1807 this township was purchased for just over twenty six dollars. By 1819 eighteen families lived here. They petitioned to name their community. Rockport was born. The name reflected the rocky embankments along the lakefront and the Rocky River.

Despite challenges like dense woods and wildlife Rockport grew. Pioneer families sought a better life here. Names like Anthony Bassett and Eaton became familiar.

In the early 1900s Rockport was considered country by Cleveland residents. Truck farming became a way of life. Farmers transported produce and poultry to the West Side Market.

In 1910 a movement for individuality emerged. Residents in the Fairview Parkview area sought to separate from Rockport. They wanted to form their own community. Goldwood Township was established on April 6 1910.

Later that year seventy five families petitioned to create a new village. Fairview Village received its official charter on September 10 1910. This division split Goldwood Township.

Fairview Village Council purchased a Town Hall site in 1913. The structure served until a Municipal Center was built in 1967. The Village purchased its first fire engine in 1924.

Fairview Village became the City of Fairview Park in 1951. Home rule became desirable in the mid 1950s. Voters elected a commission to frame a charter. The Charter of the City of Fairview Park was adopted on January 1 1959.

Today Fairview Park continues to evolve. The park hosts the annual South Fayette Community Day. This event brings the community together each August. Fairview Park offers something for everyone. It blends recreation history and community spirit.
