Imagine Glasgow during the Victorian era. It was the shipbuilding capital of the world. Right here on Govan Road stands the Fairfield Heritage Centre. This building was once the heart of the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company.

Fairfield Heritage Centre tells the story of Govan’s shipbuilding past. It shows how Fairfield became the “Shipbuildingest Burgh in the World”. It was also the lifeblood of the community.

The Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company was a major force. It built ships for the Royal Navy and transatlantic liners. These included record-breaking ships. The RMS Campania and RMS Lucania were among them. Fairfield also built smaller vessels. These included ferries for the Bosporus crossing in Istanbul.

The Fairfield Heritage Centre building itself is significant. It was built between 1889 and 1891. John Keppie was the lead designer. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a junior member of staff. He likely worked on the project. The building features Italianate and Beaux Arts elements.

Sir William Pearce commissioned the offices. He was the owner of Fairfield. Pearce died before the building was finished. Sculptures of a shipwright and an engineer adorn the entrance. These were created by James Pittendrigh Macgillivray.

Inside the Fairfield Heritage Centre, you will find the former boardroom. You can also see management offices and the directors’ dining room. The heritage area is free to visit. It uses artifacts, graphic panels, and audio-visual presentations. These exhibits explain technical innovation and the two world wars. They also explore the Fairfield Experiment in management.

The Fairfield Heritage Centre also has modern office suites. These are located in the former drawing offices and counting house. In 2006, BAE Systems launched its 750th vessel built at Fairfield. The shipyard was built on the former Fairfield farm.

The Fairfield Heritage Centre is more than just a museum. It is a reminder of Glasgow’s shipbuilding legacy. It celebrates the people and innovations that shaped the industry. A visit here connects you to a vital piece of history. The Fairfield Heritage Centre stands as a testament. It honors Glasgow’s place on the world stage.
