Here stands the Fairbanks Branch Library a beacon of knowledge. The Fairbanks Branch Library’s story began humbly. In 1922 a handful of area residents started it. They used space at the local post office.

But disaster struck. The post office caught fire in 1925. Undeterred the community rallied. They raised 146 dollars for materials. A tiny 224-square-foot “cookie box” was built. It lacked running water. Its location was Fairbanks-N. Houston Road and Hempstead Highway. This little building served the community for decades.

Now fast forward to 1971. A new Fairbanks Branch Library opened. It was twenty times larger than the original. It offered 5000 square feet of space. In 1990 the Fairbanks Branch Library expanded again. This was thanks to a gift from Elfreida C. Letz. The library now boasts 7247 square feet.
