Can a building whisper centuries of theological debate? Here at the Faculty of Theology, part of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, it certainly feels that way. The Faculty of Theology isn’t just a place of learning. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith and philosophical inquiry. Founded in 1837, as one of the original four faculties of the then Othonian University, the Faculty of Theology has witnessed the evolution of religious thought in Greece and beyond. The Faculty of Theology initially resided within the neoclassical splendor of the university’s central building. Designed by Christian Hansen, this iconic structure forms part of Athens’ architectural trilogy. Today, the Faculty of Theology calls the University Campus in Ilissia home, alongside the Schools of Philosophy and Sciences. This move in the 1960s marked a new chapter for the faculty, allowing for expansion and modernization. Designed by Lazaros Kalyvitis and Yorgos Leonardos, the building is a complex of parallel volumes, stepping down the steep slopes. Open courtyards and corridors create a sense of interconnectedness. Sadly, the building has suffered some vandalism. Yet, it continues to serve its purpose, hosting lectures and fostering intellectual exploration. The Faculty of Theology isn’t just about preserving tradition. It’s about engaging with the contemporary world. The upcoming International Congress of Christian-Orthodox Theology, planned for November 2024, exemplifies this commitment to dialogue and innovation. The congress promises to be a landmark event, with His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I delivering the opening address. The Faculty of Theology, within the prestigious National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a crucible of ideas, a place where past wisdom meets present challenges, shaping the future of religious understanding.
