Established in the scholarly atmosphere of Chiang Mai University, the Faculty of Law stands as a testament to modern legal education. The Faculty of Law wasn’t always a separate entity. Its roots trace back to 1965, nestled within the Political Science Department of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Imagine those early days. Law was a major subject for political science students, while other students could choose it as a minor or elective. The Faculty of Law at Chiang Mai University emerged as a distinct faculty in 2006, marking a pivotal moment in its history. This official establishment was documented in the Government Gazette in 2008, as part of the Chiang Mai University Act. The Faculty of Law holds a unique distinction. In 1992, while still a division within Social Sciences, it launched the first Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) program in a northern Thai government university. This pioneering move solidified Chiang Mai University’s position as a leader in legal education. The LL.B. curriculum received approval from the Thai Bar Association in 1999, ensuring graduates were eligible for bar membership and examinations. This recognition further enhanced the program’s prestige. The Faculty of Law has always adapted to the changing legal landscape. A significant curriculum revision in 2003 reflects this commitment. This revision catered to a growing demand for legal professionals and welcomed those seeking law as a second degree. In 2004, the Faculty of Law introduced a Master of Laws (LL.M.) program. This program provided specialized legal training tailored to Thailand’s evolving political, economic, and social dynamics. The Faculty of Law at Chiang Mai University continues to shape legal minds, fostering critical thinking and contributing to Thailand’s legal profession.
