Established in 1991 the Faculty of Law at the University of Macau stands as a testament to the city’s evolving legal landscape. This prestigious institution boasts a rich history intertwined with Macau’s unique journey. The Faculty of Law’s story begins long before its official founding. It’s rooted in the transformation of the University of East Asia a private institution established in 1981. This marked the dawn of modern higher education in Macau.

The University of East Asia initially catered largely to students from Hong Kong. However the signing of the Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration in 1987 triggered significant changes. The Portuguese government envisioned a public university to train professionals for the impending handover of Macau to China. This vision led to the acquisition of the University of East Asia by the Macao Foundation in 1988.

Subsequent restructuring resulted in the creation of several independent faculties including the Faculty of Science and Technology and the School of Education. Crucially a new law program was introduced. In 1991 the University of East Asia was officially renamed the University of Macau. The Faculty of Law was formally established that same year.

Today the Faculty of Law offers bachelor’s master’s doctoral and postgraduate certificate programs in Chinese Portuguese and English. It follows the Roman-German legal system known for its rigorous standards. Faculty members are renowned legal experts from Macau Mainland China Portugal and many other countries. The Faculty of Law plays a vital role in shaping legal professionals. It also contributes significantly to legal scholarship and research in Macau and beyond.

The Faculty of Law’s curriculum incorporates international perspectives. This ensures graduates are competitive globally. The unique blend of Chinese Portuguese and international legal traditions makes the Faculty of Law a special place to study law in Asia. Its graduates are well-equipped to contribute to Macau’s ongoing development and its role as a bridge between China and Portuguese-speaking countries. The Faculty of Law is more than just a place to study. It is a vital part of Macau’s journey into a new era. A testament to its determination to become a leading player on the global stage.
