Established in 1950 the Faculté universitaire de Théologie protestante stands proudly before you. Its story is one of resilience faith and intellectual pursuit. Born from the ashes of the Académie réformée de Gand a theological institution founded in 1577 during the Calvinist Republic of Ghent it faced suppression in 1584. Yet the spirit of theological study persevered.
The Faculté universitaire de Théologie protestante wasn’t resurrected until 1950. It was formed by the Union des Églises protestantes évangéliques de Belgique later the Église évangélique protestante de Belgique and the Conférence belge de l’Église méthodiste. The Église chrétienne missionnaire belge later the Église réformée de Belgique joined in 1955. This collaboration reflects a remarkable unity among diverse Protestant traditions.
This wasn’t merely a coming together of churches. The Faculté universitaire de Théologie protestante sought official recognition. On March 4 1963 royal decree granted it university status. This empowered the institution to award bachelor’s master’s and doctoral degrees. It became the sole institution in Belgium authorized by the government to provide university-level theological education. A significant milestone demonstrating the enduring influence of Protestant theology in Belgium.
In 1965 the Faculté universitaire de Théologie protestante found its permanent home at 40 rue des Bollandistes in Etterbeek Brussels. This move solidified its presence and its commitment to education. Further demonstrating this commitment in 1979 the three founding churches united under the Église protestante unie de Belgique. This included the mandate that pastors obtain the Master’s degree in pastoral ministry from the Faculté universitaire de Théologie protestante.
The Faculté universitaire de Théologie protestante continues to evolve. It formed partnerships with the Université libre de Bruxelles and the faculties of Protestant theology in Strasbourg and Montpellier. These collaborations expand research opportunities and facilitate cross-cultural exchange in theological study. The Faculté universitaire de Théologie protestante is more than just an institution.
