Nestled beside Bucharest’s sprawling King Michael I Park, the Facultatea de Medicinǎ Veterinarǎ whispers tales of centuries past. The Facultatea de Medicinǎ Veterinarǎ isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to Romania’s enduring commitment to animal health and welfare. Its roots trace back to a pivotal moment in 1852. Barbu Dimitrie Știrbei, the then Ruler of Wallachia, signed a decree that would forever shape veterinary education in Romania. He founded the Institute of Agriculture in Pantelimon, the precursor to the institution we stand before today, the Facultatea de Medicinǎ Veterinarǎ. This institute marked the genesis of veterinary studies in the country. Just a few years later, in 1861, the School of Veterinary Medicine joined the institute. This union solidified the importance of animal care in the burgeoning field of agricultural science.

The institution’s journey wasn’t without its twists and turns. In 1867, forestry sciences were incorporated into the curriculum. The school became known as the Central School of Agriculture and Forestry, reflecting this expansion of knowledge. In 1869, a grand new campus began to take shape on the Herăstrău Estate. This move marked a significant step forward. It provided a dedicated space for the blossoming fields of agriculture and veterinary medicine. The Facultatea de Medicinǎ Veterinarǎ, as we know it today, owes its physical presence to this momentous relocation. The school continued to evolve, changing names and structures throughout the 20th century. It became the Higher School of Agriculture in 1915, then the Academy of Higher Agronomic Studies in 1929. In 1938 it was merged into the Politehnica School of Bucharest as the Faculty of Agronomy. Finally, in 1948, it became the Agronomic Institute of Bucharest. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine rejoined the institute in the same year. This reunion brought together the two disciplines that had been intertwined since their inception.

The current name, the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest, was adopted in 1996. The Facultatea de Medicinǎ Veterinarǎ is one of seven faculties within this esteemed university. Today, the Facultatea de Medicinǎ Veterinarǎ stands as a beacon of veterinary excellence. It offers a six-year program leading to a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. The curriculum encompasses a wide range of animal species. From farm animals like horses, cows, and pigs to laboratory animals and even exotic species. Students benefit from state-of-the-art facilities. These include modern laboratories, a veterinary clinic, and even access to experimental research centers. The faculty boasts a rich history. It has a legacy of influential figures who have shaped the field.

Today, as you stand before the Facultatea de Medicinǎ Veterinarǎ, take a moment to appreciate the legacy it represents. The countless graduates who have dedicated their lives to animal health. The ongoing research that pushes the boundaries of veterinary science. And the unwavering commitment to the well-being of creatures great and small.
