The Facultad de Ciencias de la Documentación has a long history. It dates back to 1856. That year, the Escuela Superior de Diplomática was founded. This state education institution closed in 1900. It then became part of the Universidad de Madrid. This later became the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1970.
In the late 1980s, library science and documentation became a recognized field. This led to the creation of university schools in these areas across Spain. The Universidad Complutense approved one such school in 1990. Thus, the Escuela Universitaria de Biblioteconomía y Documentación was born. It became the Facultad de Ciencias de la Documentación in 2006. In 2006, the Facultad celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Escuela Superior de Diplomática. This commemorated the period from 1856 to 2006.
The Facultad publishes the Revista General de Información y Documentación. This journal features research in documentation sciences. It includes work from within and outside the Facultad. Since 1992, the Facultad has hosted annual conferences. These events explore topics related to libraries and archives. Until 2006, they were called Jornadas EUBD. That stood for Escuela Universitaria de Biblioteconomía y Documentación. Since 2007, they are known as Jornadas FADOC. This reflects the Facultad’s new name.
The Facultad de Ciencias de la Documentación’s library specializes in several fields. These include archival science and bibliography. Also important are library science and documentation. The library holds about 9,000 books. It subscribes to 75 periodicals.
The Facultad offers several degree programs. These include a Bachelor’s in Information and Documentation. It also provides master’s degrees. These include programs in Document Management plus Photographic Documentation. Another master’s degree is in Ancient Books and Bibliographic Heritage. The Facultad also offers a doctoral program in Documentation Sciences. It collaborates on degrees in Musicology. It is also involved in a master’s in Written Historical Heritage.
The Facultad de Ciencias de la Documentación has a Department of Library Science and Documentation. Several deans have led the Facultad. José López Yepes was director from 1990 to 1998. Luis Fernando Ramos Simón served as director and later dean. Pedro López López was director until 2005. José María de Francisco Olmos was dean until 2015. José Luis Gonzalo Sánchez-Molero was dean until 2024. Currently, María Olivera Zaldua is the dean. The Facultad continues to evolve. It adapts to the changing world of information. Its graduates shape the future of documentation.
