Emerging from the rich history of the University of Porto, the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto – Pólo Agrário stands as a testament to centuries of scientific pursuit. The University of Porto, with its current 14 faculties, was established in 1911. It began with just two faculties: Sciences and Medicine. The Faculdade de Ciências, in particular, boasts a lineage stretching back 250 years. Its roots trace back to the Aula de Náutica in 1762, followed by the Aula de Debuxo e Desenho in 1779, the Academia Real de Marinha e Comércio in 1803, and finally the Academia Politécnica in 1837. All of this unfolded at the site of the current Central Building of the University of Porto. The Faculdade de Ciências gradually relocated to Polo 3 (Campo Alegre) between 1996 and 2009. The original building now houses the Rector’s Office, Central Services, the Historical Archive, the Natural History Museum, and the Science Museum. Here at the Pólo Agrário, you’ll find the GreenUPorto – Centro de Investigação em Produção Agroalimentar Sustentável, a research center focused on sustainable agri-food production. This center tackles key issues in plant biology, production, post-harvest processes, environmental quality, and risk assessment. It also delves into food processing, valorization, consumption, and human nutrition. They even have a specialized laboratory, LABRISK, dedicated to evaluating the risks of contaminated soil and water. The Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto – Pólo Agrário offers programs like the Licenciatura em Engenharia Agronómica, a bachelor’s degree in agronomical engineering. This program provides a strong foundation in the core sciences of agronomy. Students can specialize in agricultural production or food technology and science. This prepares them for careers in primary and secondary production, respectively. The Faculdade de Ciências also offers a postgraduate program in agronomy. This caters to students with bachelor’s degrees in fields other than agronomy. It equips them with the knowledge and skills for professional roles in this important sector. The Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto – Pólo Agrário continues to contribute to scientific advancement. It focuses on promoting innovation and sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.
