Hidden within a 19th-century palace stands the Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade do Porto. Its history is a vibrant tapestry woven from threads of artistry and industry. The Faculdade didn’t begin as a grand institution. It started humbly in 1780 as an Aula de Desenho e Debuxo. Its purpose was simple: to support the burgeoning industries of Porto. Imagine the students then. They weren’t just learning to paint or sculpt. They were acquiring skills crucial for the city’s economic growth.

The Aula blossomed. By 1802 it had 120 students. Vieira Portuense a renowned painter saw its potential. He elevated its status calling it an Academia. This wasn’t just a name change. It represented an ambition. A desire for a more complete education encompassing theory and artistic examples. The Academia Portuense de Belas-Artes finally emerged in 1836. It formalized instruction in painting sculpture and architecture. It also included preparatory drawing courses.

The Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade do Porto continued to evolve. In the 1950s new buildings were constructed in its gardens. These buildings showcase unique architectural designs perfect for fine arts instruction. Throughout the 19th century and beyond the Faculdade expanded its offerings. Workshops for ceramics stained glass tapestry and printmaking were established. The school became a powerhouse of artistic innovation and education. The addition of a Communication Design course in the 1970s further broadened its scope.

In 1979 architecture gained its own autonomy separating to form the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto. Finally in 1994 the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes do Porto officially became the Faculdade de Belas-Artes. It gained full integration into the University of Porto.
