Exile site of Gwanghaegun

For four long years, this island held a king captive. Not just any king, but Gwanghaegun of the Joseon Dynasty, a ruler cast out from his throne and banished to the edges of his realm. The Exile site of Gwanghaegun, a place echoing with the weight of history, stands as a testament to his plight. Gwanghaegun, a ruler born into an era of turmoil, navigated the treacherous waters of court politics and foreign threats with surprising skill.. He implemented land reforms, rebuilt palaces ravaged by war, and even sought balance between the looming powers of the Ming Empire and the rising Manchus. But even a king’s wisdom can be overshadowed by the whispers of court intrigue. A coup d’état, orchestrated by the Westerners faction, ripped him from his throne and sent him on a path of exile. The king, stripped of his power and dignity, found himself imprisoned first on Ganghwa Island and finally here, on Jeju. Imagine the anguish, the sense of betrayal, as he spent his final years within a house “surrounded by thorns,” a punishment known as wirianchi. Even in death, Gwanghaegun’s story holds a touch of melancholy. The heavens themselves, it was said, wept for the exiled king. The heavy rainfall that often blankets Jeju around the anniversary of his death became known as gwanghae-u, “Gwanghae rain,” a poignant reminder of the monarch who lived and died in exile on these shores.
