Led by Alexander Travis, they established the “Evergreen Church,” a name that reflects the enduring spirit of faith. The church, later known as Evergreen Baptist Church, flourished, growing from a small gathering to a vibrant community. They even constructed their first dedicated sanctuary in 1908, a building that still stands today. The church’s journey wasn’t without trials. Fires and natural disasters tested their resilience, but each time, the congregation rebuilt, stronger and more united. Evergreen Baptist Church’s legacy extends beyond its walls. They’ve played a vital role in community outreach, establishing institutions like the Louise Short Baptist Widows’ and Orphans’ Home, which later became The Alabama Baptist Children’s Home.
