Wouldn’t it be interesting to explore a church that embodies resilience and transformation? Welcome to Everett United Methodist Church. This church has a story that stretches across time and congregations. In 2023, something remarkable happened. Four United Methodist congregations decided to join forces.

Union, Old West Church, Community UMC and Glendale UMC merged. This merger formed the Union Combined Parish. Everett United Methodist Church became part of this new entity. Union’s story began much earlier in 1769. A group of African American believers started meeting in Beacon Hill. They gathered for study and worship.

The faith community grew and they requested their first pastor. Rev. Samuel Snowden was a former slave turned abolitionist. He led them in founding the Mary Street Meeting House. This meeting house soon became too small. A larger church was built that served as a station along the Underground Railroad. The congregation moved with Boston’s Black population. They went from Beacon Hill to Roxbury and finally to Columbus Ave.

The church took the name Union. In 1950, Union hosted a significant NAACP convention. This convention voted to pursue Brown v. Board in 1966. By the 1970s, Union led the development of Meth-Union Manor. This was an affordable cooperative in the South End. During the 1980s and 1990s, Union fought against apartheid in South Africa. They also fought for economic equality at home.

In 2000, Union declared itself a safe space for LGBTQ+ persons. Union has a rich history spanning over 200 years. It has had eight different names. These names were spread across five locations. These locations included three different denominations. Throughout all these changes, they remained committed to love and liberation.

The merger that formed the Union Combined Parish signifies a new chapter. Everett United Methodist Church now shares this legacy. It continues to serve its community with a spirit of unity and inclusivity. This is a testament to the enduring power of faith. It shows the strength of a community that embraces change.

As part of the Union Combined Parish, Everett United Methodist Church continues its mission. It offers a welcoming space for worship and service. Its members carry forward a heritage of social justice and spiritual growth. This church is a living example of how different communities can come together. They unite to create something greater than themselves. Everett United Methodist Church embodies the spirit of love and liberation. It stands as a beacon of hope in Everett and beyond.
