Rising majestically in Hannover’s Kronsberg neighborhood stands the Evangelisches Kirchenzentrum Kronsberg. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to faith resilience and architectural ingenuity. Built to house Expo 2000 attendees it embodies a unique blend of modern design and spiritual significance.
The Evangelisches Kirchenzentrum Kronsberg wasn’t always meant to be solely Lutheran. It began as an ecumenical project. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Hildesheim withdrew however. The Hanover City Evangelical Lutheran Church Synod then took over. The Society for Building and Housing Hanover partnered in the effort.
Construction commenced on May 17 1999. On October 8 2000 the church opened its doors. The grand inauguration included a mass and festivities. The project cost approximately €5.5 million. Funding came from various sources. This included the Church of Hanover the Hanover City Evangelical Lutheran Church Association and the Hanover Housing Association.
The Evangelisches Kirchenzentrum Kronsberg’s design is strikingly simple. It resembles a monastery. Concrete and glass are the primary materials. The Brunnenhof a leafy courtyard serves as a central meeting place. It’s surrounded by 25 apartments. There are also apartments for the sexton and the pastor. A beautiful granite sculpture by Ulrich Rückriem adds a touch of artistry to the Brunnenhof.
Inside the Evangelisches Kirchenzentrum Kronsberg light floods the space. Three sides are glazed. The fourth side features translucent blue glass. A hidden window casts a unique light onto the altar in the afternoons. The glasswork is the creation of Jochem Poensgen. His work also includes a glass door before the meditation area.
The altar is simple yet elegant. Made of smooth concrete it hangs freely. The baptismal font is integrated into the altar. The Easter candle rests on a stone from the Sea of Galilee.
The Evangelisches Kirchenzentrum Kronsberg’s bells have a story too. They were salvaged from St Ansgar’s Church in Hanover. Each bell carries a significant biblical inscription representing hope patience prayer and renewal. These bells chime out their message of faith to the Kronsberg community today.
The Evangelisches Kirchenzentrum Kronsberg is more than just a place of worship. It hosts services in diverse formats. These formats include film music and literature. It also holds exhibitions and concerts. It has become a vibrant community center fulfilling its initial purpose and much more. Its story reflects faith’s adaptability its enduring presence in a changing world and its power to unite.
