Have you ever imagined a world where the ringing of a bell could signal both the start of a lesson and the call to worship? The Evangelisches Gymnasium Hermannswerder is that place, nestled upon the serene Hermannswerder island in Potsdam. Built in 1908 by Clara Hoffbauer, it began as a Lyzeum – a school for girls aspiring to higher education. Throughout the turbulent 20th century, the gymnasium transformed into a boarding school, known as the Kirchliches Oberseminar Hermannswerder, a haven for ambitious students seeking a Christian education, even under the communist regime of the GDR. Many students from all over the DDR came to Hermannswerder to prepare for their Abitur, the final year of high school, even though their degrees were only valid for theological studies at church-affiliated universities. Even though their degrees were only valid for theological studies at church-affiliated universities. But they were accepted as full qualifications by German universities. The gymnasium’s legacy as a beacon of knowledge endured. After German reunification, the school embraced a new era. It became the first private school in former East Germany, and its student body blossomed, now boasting over 700 students. Today, the Evangelisches Gymnasium Hermannswerder maintains its rich tradition of academic excellence with a distinct Christian ethos. The school, a testament to faith and learning, stands proudly amidst a historical tapestry weaving together the past and the present.
