This peaceful place wasn’t always so tranquil. It opened at the start of the 20th century. The rapidly industrializing Ruhr region needed more burial space. More and more people were moving to Wickede. The old church cemetery couldn’t handle the influx of the deceased. The Evangelischer Friedhof Dortmund-Wickede was built nearby to the east.
In 1928 Wickede became a Dortmund district. The city took over the relatively new cemetery. After World War II the cemetery expanded south. Four more burial sections were added. A beautiful ceremonial hall was built. It’s on the main path. This path runs from the main entrance through the cemetery. The administrative building is nearby. It houses the cemetery office. Close by are mature trees. Local residents enjoy strolling and relaxing here. This makes the Evangelischer Friedhof Dortmund-Wickede not just a place of rest but also a valuable green space.
Today the Evangelischer Friedhof Dortmund-Wickede covers about seven hectares. It is one of Dortmund’s largest cemeteries. The main entrance is on the north side. The office and the ceremonial hall are in the center. The Evangelischer Friedhof Dortmund-Wickede is located in a quiet area. The old Protestant church cemetery is right next to it to the west. Dortmund Airport is nearby to the south.
The Evangelischer Friedhof Dortmund-Wickede is easy to reach by public transport. The Bockumweg U-Bahn station is close to the main entrance. The Eichwaldstraße and Dollersweg stops are also within walking distance. So is the Dortmund-Wickede S-Bahn station. Visitors can also park on the north side.
The Evangelischer Friedhof Dortmund-Wickede has the same opening hours as other Dortmund cemeteries. From November to February it’s open from 8 am to 5 pm. In March and October it’s open from 8 am to 7 pm. April and September it’s open from 8 am to 8 pm. May through August it’s open from 7:30 am to 8 pm. On Sundays and public holidays it opens at 9 am.
