The oldest surviving tombstone here dates back to 1887. It belongs to the Dietz family. This is Evangelischer Friedhof Altglienicke.

Evangelischer Friedhof Altglienicke in Berlin’s Altglienicke district holds a unique place in history. Established in 1884 it’s more than just a cemetery. It’s a living testament to the community’s past. This peaceful space is nestled among residential buildings. It runs along Am Alten Friedhof street.

Before 1884 Altglienicke had a different burial site. It was near the village church. However this location proved problematic. The area was swampy prone to flooding. Sometimes coffins even resurfaced. A higher ground was needed. So a new cemetery was sought. The solution was a higher area near the Teltowkanal and the A113 motorway.

The Evangelischer Friedhof Altglienicke is significant. It’s not just about graves. The cemetery’s chapel designed by F Nischau and E Schindler in 1904 stands as a beautiful landmark. It’s protected as a historical monument. So is the wrought iron entrance gate. E Markus created the gate in 1905. The inscription above the gate is from the Old Testament. It reads “I know that my redeemer lives”. The surrounding wall with its old family burial plots is also a protected monument.

The Evangelischer Friedhof Altglienicke offers various burial options. There are traditional earth plots urn burial areas and anonymous graves.

One notable figure buried here is Friedrich Hannemann. He lived from 1831 to 1898. He served as a community and school leader. He also held other important positions in local government. Hannemann was instrumental in Altglienicke’s development. He even provided the land for this very cemetery.

Today Evangelischer Friedhof Altglienicke continues its legacy. It provides a peaceful place of remembrance. It also serves as a historical landmark within Berlin. The site offers a mix of modern and traditional burial options. It’s a testament to Altglienicke’s enduring spirit. Remember this when you visit Evangelischer Friedhof Altglienicke.
