Evangelische Schule Berlin-Mitte stands as a testament to educational reform. It embraces a unique approach to learning. Founded in September 2001, the school began as a parent initiative. It started as a small, two-form entry primary school.
Initially, the school was under the care of the Evangelische Schule Berlin-Mitte e.V. In January 2003, the Evangelische Landeskirche in Berlin-Brandenburg assumed responsibility. Since 2004, the Schulstiftung der Evangelischen Kirche in Berlin-Brandenburg-schlesische Oberlausitz has been the school’s sponsor. The Schulstiftung collaborates with the Evangelische Schule Berlin-Mitte association.
In 2007, the Evangelische Schule Berlin Zentrum was established. It is a three-form entry secondary school. It includes a grammar school upper level. Together, Evangelische Schule Berlin-Mitte and Evangelische Schule Berlin Zentrum form a Gemeinschaftsschule. This is under the direction of the Evangelische Schulstiftung.
Evangelische Schule Berlin-Mitte serves approximately 300 students. These students are in grades 1 through 6. The secondary school has around 645 students in grades 7 through 13. The schools focus on reform pedagogy. They are inclusive. Their methods are inspired by Montessori principles.
The school’s financing has been secured. Since January 1, 2003, the Schulstiftung der Evangelischen Kirche has managed it. It operates within Berlin’s school laws. Parents contribute income-based school fees.
Though a Gemeinschaftsschule, the ESBM and ESBZ are at different locations. Evangelische Schule Berlin-Mitte is housed in a three-story building on Rochstraße. This DDR-Plattenbau was renovated in 2012 and 2013. The ESBZ is located on Wallstraße 32.
The Gemeinschaftsschule values Christian principles. It uses approaches of reform pedagogy. Students are taught across grades until the 10th grade. There is no separation of students based on performance. Students can earn various qualifications. These include the Mittlere Schulabschluss after the 10th grade. They can also get the erweiterte Berufsbildungsreife after the 10th grade. The Berufsbildungsreife is available after the 9th or 10th grade. The Abitur is possible in the 13th grade.
At the Grundschule level, children learn German and Maths. They use Montessori materials. They work independently. From the 4th grade, students document their learning. They use logbooks. Children learn at their own pace. English and science are taught in same-age groups. Grades 7 through 9 are taught across grades at the ESBZ. Tutors support them. Students in grades 1 to 9 receive feedback through discussions. They also get written reports. Learning includes Lernbüros for core subjects. Project work is interdisciplinary. Workshops are also included.
Unique subjects include “Responsibility”. Here, students engage in social work. Another is “Challenge”. Small groups plan and carry out a trip independently.
Evangelische Schule Berlin-Mitte welcomes children of all faiths. Religious education is taught for two hours a week. Students attend weekly services. These services are held at the Evangelische Marienkirche. The school celebrates church events. It partners with local congregations. These are Am Weinberg and St. Petri/St. Marien.
