Hear the chime of history. The Evangelische Kirche Rüdinghausen stands before you. This isn’t just any church. This is a story etched in stone and resounding in bells.

The Evangelische Kirche Rüdinghausen in Witten a city near Dortmund boasts a rich history. Its current structure a beautiful example of late 19th-century round-arch style is not the first church on this hallowed ground. Long before the current building stood tall a wooden church welcomed worshippers as early as 1326. Imagine a simple wooden structure nine spaces for men a few benches for the farmers and cottagers. This first church was a gift from the knight Gerhard von Witten a testament to the faith of the community. For centuries this modest building served its purpose until it crumbled.

The wooden church’s decay led to its replacement in 1786. But this second iteration of the Evangelische Kirche Rüdinghausen didn’t last. It too succumbed to time being replaced in 1830. This third church continued to serve until 1864. It then became something quite different homes and classrooms.

The Evangelische Kirche Rüdinghausen you see today owes its existence to the plans of Berlin architect Friedrich August Stüler. He created a church that is a masterpiece of architectural design. Consecrated on May 11 1864 it became the heart of the community. Since 1976 it’s been recognized as a significant landmark.

Restoration brought the church back to its former glory. From 1978 to 1982 painstaking work was done to preserve its original character. New choir windows were installed in 1984. Even the bell tower wasn’t immune to the effects of time. The heavy steel bells caused significant damage. A restoration project from 2005 to 2009 ensured the bells would continue their timeless call to worship.

Those bells three of them cast in 1870 at the Bochumer Verein are worth noting. The largest rings a resonant a1 its diameter a magnificent 1045 mm its weight a solid 500 kg. Their tones have echoed through generations.

Outside stands another relic of the church’s history. An old bell from 1836. It proudly bears an inscription. A dedication to Kammerherr Freiherr von Romberg. It thanks Gottfried Rincker of Elberfeld for creating this special bell for Rüdinghausen in 1835.

The Evangelische Kirche Rüdinghausen is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to faith community and perseverance. A testament to the enduring spirit of this town a silent witness to centuries of history. A place where the past present and future of Rüdinghausen intersect.
