Nestled in the heart of Nuremberg, the Evangelische Hochschule Nürnberg, or EVHN, isn’t just a place of learning. It’s a living testament to resilience and transformation. Imagine standing here in 1927, witnessing the birth of the Evangelische Frauenschule, the precursor to the EVHN. This institution, dedicated to empowering women through education, flourished until the dark shadow of the Nazi regime forced its closure in 1939. But the spirit of learning couldn’t be extinguished. In 1947, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the institution was reborn in Neuendettelsau as the Soziales und Katechetisches Seminar. The Evangelische Hochschule Nürnberg, as we know it today, officially emerged in 1995. It consolidated three key areas: Pflegemanagement (Nursing Management), Religionspädagogik und Kirchliche Bildungsarbeit (Religious Education and Church Educational Work), and Sozialwesen (Social Work). These diverse disciplines, united under one roof, reflect the EVHN’s commitment to holistic education. The EVHN offers a wide array of bachelor’s and master’s programs, catering to around 1325 students in the winter semester of 2021/22. From Diakonik (Deaconry) to Sozialwirtschaft (Social Economics), the programs address pressing social issues and empower students to create positive change. The university also houses several research institutes, including the Institut für innovative Suchtbehandlung und Suchtforschung (ISS), focusing on addiction treatment and research. The Evangelische Hochschule Nürnberg isn’t just an educational institution. It’s a vibrant hub of research, innovation, and community engagement. It’s a place where students from 29 different countries converge, fostering a rich intercultural exchange. As you stand before the EVHN, consider the journey it has taken, from a small women’s school to a renowned university. It’s a story of perseverance, adaptation, and an unwavering commitment to education, a story that continues to unfold within these walls.
