Can a church be born in secrecy? The Evangelisch-Freikirchliche Gemeinde Berlin-Tempelhof can answer that. Its story begins not in grand halls, but in hushed whispers and a hidden baptism. In 1837, Gottfried Wilhelm Lehmann, his wife Leonore, and a handful of believers dared to challenge the status quo. They embraced the Baptist faith, a radical departure from the state-sanctioned church. Johann Gerhard Oncken, a key figure in the German Baptist movement, traveled from Hamburg to baptize them in the Rummelsburger See, shrouded in secrecy. The Evangelisch-Freikirchliche Gemeinde Berlin-Tempelhof, the first Baptist church in Berlin, was born. The church’s early years were marked by adversity. Lehmann faced ostracism and even violence for his beliefs. The congregation, denied traditional spaces, held services in homes, constantly moving to avoid persecution. Their first chapel, built in 1847 on Schmidstraße, was disguised on building plans as “a house for Mr. Lehmann” to circumvent restrictions. The church thrived despite the challenges, growing to over 300 members by 1847. The Evangelisch-Freikirchliche Gemeinde Berlin-Tempelhof continued to grow, even splitting in 1887 due to its burgeoning numbers. The congregation on Schmidstraße continued to support branches throughout Berlin, a testament to its enduring spirit. The 20th century brought new trials. World War I depleted the church’s ranks as young men went off to fight. The congregation transformed its space into a makeshift hospital and refugee center, reflecting its commitment to service. The Nazi era brought a complex and troubling chapter. While some Baptists saw an opportunity for growth under the regime, others felt unease. The church largely avoided direct political confrontation, focusing on internal matters. However, stories of individual resistance, like a church member sheltering a Jewish woman, hint at a deeper struggle. The church’s original building on Schmidstraße was destroyed by bombs in 1943. Yet, the congregation persevered. After the war, they purchased land on what is now Tempelhofer Damm. In 1960, a new church building was inaugurated on this site, the Evangelisch-Freikirchliche Gemeinde Berlin-Tempelhof finally found a permanent home. The church stands today as a testament to the power of faith, resilience, and community. It whispers of secret baptisms, of struggles for recognition, of resilience in the face of war and political turmoil. It speaks of a community that, from its humble beginnings, continues to thrive in the heart of Berlin.
