Behold the soaring spire before you. This is the Ev. Erlöserkirche in Mannheim. Its story is one of faith and resilience. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Seckenheim community.

The history of a church in Seckenheim stretches back to 823. A document first mentioned it then. However, the story of the Ev. Erlöserkirche itself begins much later. After the Reformation, Seckenheim saw many changes in religious affiliation. For over two centuries, Catholics and Protestants shared St. Aegidius Church. This lasted until Seckenheim’s population outgrew the space.

In 1857, the Protestant community decided to build their own church. They generously left St. Aegidius to the Catholics. Finding the right location proved difficult. They desired a prominent spot on Hauptstraße. But only a plot on Freiburger Straße was initially available. Finally, in 1866, they acquired a property. Construction began the following year. On April 21, 1869, the Ev. Erlöserkirche was consecrated.

Designed by Hermann Behaghel, the Ev. Erlöserkirche showcases a beautiful neogothic style. Notice the pointed arch windows. Observe the intricate tracery. Admire the buttresses and finials. The Ev. Erlöserkirche is a three-aisled church with galleries. Its 65-meter-high tower dominates the skyline. The tower features a square base. It transitions to an octagonal bell chamber. It is topped with a pointed spire.

Look closely at the main portal of the Ev. Erlöserkirche. You will see an inscription. It reads “Seelig sind die Gottes Wort hören und bewahren”. This translates to “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it”.

Inside the Ev. Erlöserkirche, simplicity reigns. The wooden gallery retains its original neogothic carvings. The communion set dates back to 1809. It was inherited from the shared church. After World War II, Willy Oeser designed three of the choir windows.

The Ev. Erlöserkirche faced challenges during the Nazi era. A pro-Nazi pastor was appointed in 1941. After the war, the church was one of the few in Mannheim to survive with relatively minor damage. American artillery fire caused the damage. Restoration quickly followed. However, some decorative elements were removed.

In 1951, the church underwent an interior renovation. It was then that it received the name Erlöserkirche. This translates to Church of the Redeemer. Further renovations occurred in 1986 and 1993.

Originally, the Ev. Erlöserkirche had four bronze bells. These were cast in 1868. During World War I, three of the largest bells were melted down for the war effort. In 1921, steel bells replaced them. These survived World War II. In 2006, the Ev. Erlöserkirche acquired a new set of five bronze bells.

One bell is especially noteworthy. The Redeemer Bell weighs 1,130 kilograms. Its inscription reads “Ich weiß, dass mein Erlöser lebt”. This translates to “I know that my Redeemer lives”.

The Ev. Erlöserkirche stands not only as a building. It stands as a symbol of faith and perseverance for the community of Seckenheim. Its history reflects the changing tides of time. Its architecture inspires awe. Its bells call all to reflection. Take a moment to appreciate the Ev. Erlöserkirche’s enduring presence.
