The Eustachius-Kugler-Denkmal commemorates a man of humble origins, born Joseph Kugler in 1867. He was the son of a farmer and blacksmith. A workplace accident in 1884 left him with a permanent leg injury. This injury initially hindered his dream of joining the Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God. Despite setbacks, his persistence paid off. He entered the order at the age of 26, taking the name Eustachius. Eustachius Kugler served in various roles. He became Prior of the Straubing institution in 1905. He then led the hospital in Neuburg an der Donau in 1922. He was appointed Provincial of the order for Bavaria in 1925. His most ambitious project began in 1929 with the construction of a hospital in Regensburg. This endeavor was controversial due to its scale. Some questioned the practicality. Some even whispered accusations of “scrupulous modesty” and nicknamed him “Klostersepp,” not always with kindness. Eustachius faced opposition even within his own order. But his vision and unwavering faith propelled him forward. The Eustachius-Kugler-Denkmal serves as a reminder of his strength and resilience during challenging times. During the Nazi era, he endured Gestapo interrogations. He offered comfort and support to war-torn communities, despite his own failing health. His selfless devotion to his calling earned him the reputation of a saint. The hospital he championed, now known as the Krankenhaus der Barmherzigen Brüder Regensburg, stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. It boasts around 900 beds and approximately 2,300 employees. It is the largest Catholic hospital in Germany. In 1982, Kugler’s remains were transferred to the hospital’s church, St. Pius. He was beatified in Regensburg Cathedral on October 4, 2009.
