The former church was reborn as a Jewish Community Center and Synagogue. This wasn’t merely a renovation. It was a powerful act of reclaiming history. A bold statement of faith.
Etz Chaim serves the Liberale Jüdische Gemeinde Hannover. This vibrant community boasts over 700 members. Etz Chaim offers them a place of worship. A center for community life. The transformation of the building is noteworthy. A former Christian house of worship now houses a thriving Jewish community. This speaks volumes about the changing religious landscape of Germany. The synagogue’s interior is breathtaking. The almost square main prayer room soars seven meters high. Built-in cabinets illuminate from behind. These cabinets combined with textile glass walls create a unique ambiance. The focal point of the room is the Torah Shrine. This magnificent shrine has a golden aluminum door. Its pattern echoes the Star of David. This motif repeats in the entrance gate. It continues through the space towards the Torah cabinet itself.
To enhance the sacred atmosphere large glass plates are covered with textiles. LED lights between the walls and the textile create an ethereal glow. The light refracts off the textiles.
