A champion’s legacy. That’s what Étienne-Desmarteau represents. This district this park this arena all bear his name. He was more than just a strong man. He was a symbol of Canadian pride.

Étienne Desmarteau was a Montrealer. Born in Boucherville in 1873 he became a fire officer. He was also an exceptional athlete. He competed in weight throwing a sport not in the Olympics today. He won the American AAU championships in 1902 beating John Flanagan. Flanagan was a favorite for the 1904 Olympics.

His quest for Olympic glory cost him his job. He needed leave to compete in St Louis but his employer refused. He went anyway. He won gold. His first throw was a winning 34 feet 4 inches. He was the only non-American to win a field event.

His victory brought him a hero’s welcome. He was rehired by the Montreal police. Sadly he died the following year possibly from typhoid fever. He was only 32 years old.

A district a park and the Étienne Desmarteau Centre remember him. The centre hosted basketball during the 1976 Olympics. He is considered Canada’s first Olympic champion. There is some debate about this. George Orton a Canadian who competed for an American university also won gold in 1900. Still Étienne Desmarteau’s story is one of dedication sacrifice and triumph. He remains an inspiration. A true Montreal hero.
