Is that flame still burning? The Eternal Flame War Memorial stands as a poignant reminder of sacrifice. This memorial in Honolulu honors the men and women of Hawaii who served in the U.S. armed forces. It stands across from the Hawaii State Capitol Building.

Let’s delve into its history. The Eternal Flame War Memorial was first erected in 1944. This was exactly three years after the attack on Pearl Harbor. That infamous attack propelled the United States into World War II. Akaji Bumpei designed the memorial we see today. It was dedicated on October 28, 1972.

Imagine a time before this memorial. Since its installation, the Eternal Flame’s gas torch burns. It is a steadfast symbol. The flame honors those who served in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Navy, and Marines. They served in both major and minor conflicts.

Pause for a moment and reflect. This isn’t the only Eternal Flame on Oahu. Honolulu Hale also has one. It commemorates the September 11 attacks.

Interestingly, the flame hasn’t always burned without interruption. In December 2022, it was out due to needed repairs. Trash had damaged the propane-fueled burner. Finding specialized parts proved difficult.

Allen Hoe, a Vietnam veteran, shared a personal story. For 28 years, he lit a candle at the flame with his children. This was a Christmas Eve tradition. He wanted to remember lost comrades. In 2004, he found the flame unlit. His son was deployed to Iraq at the time.

Walter Ozawa, a retired Army Colonel, expressed his disappointment. He noted that many people might not even realize the memorial exists. It stands next to the governor’s home. People walk by it daily.

Hawaii residents have served in the U.S. military since the War of 1812. More recently, they served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Eternal Flame serves as a reminder. Government has a responsibility for all its facilities. Maintaining them is crucial. Building something new creates a commitment to maintain it.

As you leave, consider the flame’s enduring symbolism. May it continue to burn brightly. It must honor Hawaii’s veterans.
