The Estátua ao Futuro represents the city. It stands as a guardian in the form of a Roman warrior. The warrior is topped by a dragon and he wields a lance.
This iconic statue has moved around a bit. It finally found its place at the Terreiro da Sé. The architect Fernando Távora chose this spot.
Let’s delve into the details of this imposing figure. The Estátua ao Futuro sports a breastplate. This covers its chest and part of its back. A two-edged sword hangs at its waist. In its right hand, the statue holds a long lance. Its left hand rests on a shield. The shield displays Porto’s coat of arms. The inscription “Portus Cale” is also visible. Crowning the warrior’s head is a helmet. A dragon sits atop the helmet. A flowing cape and a kilt complete the attire. It is truly the representation of Porto, a defender of the city.
The statue’s journey through Porto is fascinating. It was once on the triangular pediment of the Palacete Monteiro Moreira. This served as the Paços do Concelho. That is the old city hall. The building stood on what is now the Praça da Liberdade. When Avenida dos Aliados was built, the old city hall was torn down. The statue was removed.
For a time, the Estátua ao Futuro resided next to the Paço Episcopal. Later, it moved to the medieval wall. It then found a home in the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal. Architect Fernando Távora placed it in the Terreiro da Sé. He positioned it with its back to the city during the Casa dos 24 reconstruction.
The Estátua ao Futuro is carved from granite. João de Sousa Alão conceived it. Master stonemason João Silva sculpted it in 1818. The cost was 343,200 reis. The payments were made in three equal installments.
This statue may have roots in an older one. It was known as “O Porto primitivo”. This was a crude stone carving documented since 1293. It stood in the Rua das Eiras. Later, in 1503, it was moved to the Rua Francisca slaughterhouses. These stood in front of the Sé. The statue was placed above the entrance to the slaughterhouses. These were demolished to create the Praça da Penaventosa. This is now the Largo Dr. Pedro Vitorino.
