Who would have thought a king’s name would grace a football stadium? Estúdio Dom Afonso Henriques, named after Portugal’s first king, stands as a testament to history and sport. This isn’t just any stadium. It’s a symbol of Guimarães, the birthplace of Portugal and home to Vitória Sport Clube. Built in 1965 as Estádio Municipal de Guimarães, it held a modest 15,000. The inaugural match saw Vitória SC triumph over Os Belenenses 2-1. Young Albertino Castro, a product of Vitória’s youth system, scored the first goal on this hallowed ground.
The stadium wasn’t always Vitória SC’s. The Guimarães City Council owned it until 1990, when it was sold to the club for a symbolic one million escudos. A decade earlier, the stadium had its first major renovation for the 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship. Later, in 1995, members voted to rename the stadium after Dom Afonso Henriques. It was a fitting tribute to the king born in this very city.
The transformation of Estúdio Dom Afonso Henriques continued. For Euro 2004, a significant investment of €37.3 million modernized and expanded the stadium to its current capacity of 30,000. Local architect Eduardo Guimarães led the project, creating a modern stadium that blended seamlessly with the city’s architecture. The reopening in 2003 featured a multimedia show and another Vitória SC victory, this time a 4-1 thrashing of 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
Estúdio Dom Afonso Henriques has witnessed incredible moments. It hosted Euro 2004 matches and games during the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. More recently, it was a venue for the 2018–19 UEFA Nations League. However, the stadium has also seen tragedy. In 2004, Benfica player Miklós Fehér collapsed on the field during a match, later passing away. Every time Benfica plays here, a ceremony remembers Fehér.
Beyond football, Estúdio Dom Afonso Henriques has hosted other events. The North Music Festival in 2017 brought music to the stadium, featuring artists like Eurovision winner Salvador Sobral. Vitória SC consistently draws strong crowds. They rank among the highest attendances in Portugal, a testament to the passion of their fans. Estúdio Dom Afonso Henriques continues to be a vibrant hub of sport, history, and community in the heart of Guimarães.
