“Did the earth move for you, too?” a nervous voice whispered in the aftermath of the tremor. We stand before the Estación Sismológica MNIG Monterrey. It’s a sentinel silently observing the earth’s subtle shudders and powerful quakes. This station, operated by UNAM UANL, plays a vital role in understanding the seismic activity of northeastern Mexico, a region once considered aseismic. The Estación Sismológica MNIG Monterrey became operational in January 2006, filling a significant gap in Mexico’s seismic monitoring network. Before the station’s establishment, smaller earthquakes often went unrecorded. The historical record, though, tells tales of significant tremors. In 1841, a powerful earthquake, likely between magnitude 6 and 7, rattled Saltillo, causing widespread damage and even fatalities. Its effects rippled across a 350km radius, reaching Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, and Tamaulipas. More recently, in June 2009, two earthquakes, magnitudes 4.4 and 4.5 (calculated as 5 and 5.1 Mw by SSN), struck near Montemorelos, causing minor damage and power outages. These events highlight the importance of the Estación Sismológica MNIG Monterrey in monitoring and understanding this region’s seismic activity. The data collected here contributes to a larger understanding of intraplate seismicity, the type of earthquake activity that occurs within tectonic plates, rather than at their boundaries. This station is more than just a building; it’s a vital link in our understanding of the powerful forces shaping the earth beneath our feet. It reminds us that even in seemingly stable regions, the earth is constantly moving, shifting, and reminding us of its immense power.
