Does the name Estaçao Ferroviária de Vila Meã roll off the tongue easily? This railway station has a story to tell. It is a story of connection, progress and a little bit of local pride.

The Estaçao Ferroviária de Vila Meã serves the Vila Meã locality. It sits on the Douro line. This line is vital to the region’s development.

Construction of the Douro line began in 1873. The first phase linked Ermesinde and Penafiel. It opened in 1875. The line reached Caíde de Rei five months later. The line’s progress stalled for three years. Building tunnels between Caíde and Vila Meã caused delays. Another tunnel between Marco de Canaveses and Juncal also caused holdups. These tunnels were over one kilometer each. The first train finally arrived at Vila Meã in 1878. The Caíde de Rei/Juncal section opened on September 15.

The railway brought huge benefits to Vila Meã. The town had recently lost its municipal status. The railway offered convenience and speed. It revitalized the locality. Vila Meã needed something to regain its economic importance. It had been a leading economic center in the Porto district.

The Visconde de Santa Cruz played a key role. The initial plan bypassed Vila Meã. The Visconde convinced engineers to divert the line. It passed through Oliveira. A new iron bridge completed the necessary kilometers. This secured a station for Vila Meã. In 1907, the Visconde arrived by special train. His family disembarked right in front of his house. They used a temporary wooden staircase.

The Estaçao Ferroviária de Vila Meã boosted local commerce and industry. It helped compensate for a lack of public investment. Vila Meã has always had good connections. The Estrada Pombalina brought travelers before the railway. It connected Vila Real to Porto. The post for nearby parishes also passed through Vila Meã.

In 1902, the station offered discounted tickets to Porto. This promotion coincided with an exhibition at the Palácio de Cristal. In 1933, the station’s pier was paved. In 1952, the station received an honorable mention. It also won a persistence award in a floral competition. This was due to repeated recognition in previous years.

Today, the Estaçao Ferroviária de Vila Meã has two main tracks. They are electrified. Both tracks have access to a platform. A secondary track also exists. The passenger building is on the west side of the tracks.

In 2023, suburban trains serve the Estaçao Ferroviária de Vila Meã. Regional trains also stop here once a day in each direction.

The Estaçao Ferroviária de Vila Meã continues to connect people and places. It stands as a testament to Vila Meã’s history. It is a symbol of progress and local determination.
