Gazing across the Douro River at the vibrant cityscape of Porto, can you imagine a time when Estação Ferroviária de Gaia was the main railway hub for the entire region? Before the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge and the São João Bridge graced the skyline, this station, sometimes called Devesas or Vila Nova de Gaia, held a pivotal role. Inaugurated on June 8, 1863, Estação Ferroviária de Gaia initially marked the northern terminus of the Linha do Norte, the vital railway connecting Lisbon and Porto. The journey from Lisbon to Porto was a lengthy affair back then. Travelers endured a combination of steamboat and stagecoach, often facing delays due to flooded roads and bridges. The railway promised a faster, more comfortable alternative, but the challenge of bridging the Douro River proved a significant obstacle. Engineers grappled with various proposals, some suggesting tunnels through the Serra do Pilar or bridges further east. Ultimately, constructing a bridge so close to Porto proved too complex at the time. So, Estação Ferroviária de Gaia became the temporary gateway to Porto. For several years, passengers disembarked here and crossed the river using other means, much like the situation in Barreiro for those traveling to Lisbon before the construction of the 25 de Abril Bridge. Estação Ferroviária de Gaia became a bustling hub, its importance reflected in its sprawling layout. The station boasted numerous tracks and platforms, along with various support buildings like dormitories for railway staff, water towers, covered docks, and warehouses. Some of these structures still stand today, whispering tales of a bygone era of steam locomotives and bustling railway activity. The eventual construction of the Dom Maria Pia Bridge in 1877 finally extended the Linha do Norte across the Douro, shifting the main railway activity to Porto’s Campanhã station. Yet, Estação Ferroviária de Gaia continued to serve the community, its role evolving with the changing times. The station witnessed the arrival of royalty for the International Exposition of Porto in 1865. It saw the introduction of electric trains in the 1960s, marking another step forward in railway technology. Even today, Estação Ferroviária de Gaia remains a vital part of Porto’s public transport network, a tangible link to a fascinating chapter in the city’s history.
