Clutching a worn copy of “A Cidade e as Serras,” I found myself standing before Estação Ferroviária de Aregos – Caldas de Aregos. This very station, or one remarkably like it, inspired Eça de Queirós’s fictional “Estação de Tormes.” I pictured Jacinto and Zé Fernandes arriving here, weary from their Parisian adventures, ready to embrace the simple life. The actual Estação de Aregos, also known as Aregos – Caldas de Aregos, serves the spa town of Caldas de Aregos. It’s a vital stop on the Linha do Douro, the railway line snaking its way from Porto to Pocinho. This station, opened in 1879 as part of the Juncal-Régua section, has witnessed over a century of comings and goings. In 1901, a road was still under construction to improve access to the station. By 1950, it was a key interchange point for both rail and road transport. Today, Estação de Aregos has two platforms serving two tracks. The platforms are 155m and 244m long, catering to both regional and inter-regional trains operated by Comboios de Portugal (CP). The station offers essential amenities like toilets, a waiting room, and public phones, ensuring a comfortable journey for passengers. Imagine the echoes of conversations, the clatter of luggage, and the hiss of steam engines throughout the years. This station has been a gateway to the Douro Valley, connecting travelers to its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. It stands as a testament to Portugal’s railway history, a tangible link between past and present.
