Gazing across the bustling expanse of Kolkata’s Esplanade, can you sense the echoes of history? Esplanade isn’t just a neighborhood. It’s the city’s beating heart, a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of commerce, culture, and colonial legacy. Originally, Esplanade referred to the northern part of a jungle that stretched from present-day Dharmatala to Chandpal Ghat on the Hooghly River. Imagine elegant walking parties strolling through this area during Warren Hastings’ time. This very ground witnessed Kolkata’s first recorded football match in April 1858, a contest between the Calcutta Club of Civilians and the Gentlemen of Barrakpur.
