A ribbon of green winds along Manhattan’s East River. This is the East River Greenway also known as the East River Esplanade. It’s a pathway for walkers and cyclists. It stretches for almost ten miles.

The Esplanade wasn’t built all at once. Sections were added over decades. Some parts date back to the 1930s and 1950s. They were built alongside the FDR Drive. Other sections like East River Esplanade Park arrived much later in 1992. Even today parts are still under construction. The most recent addition the East Midtown section opened in 2023.

Imagine strolling along the Esplanade in the summer of 2008. You might have witnessed something truly spectacular. The city hosted the New York City Waterfalls. The Esplanade offered prime viewing spots. This temporary art installation transformed the riverfront.

The Esplanade isn’t just a path. It’s a vibrant tapestry of city life. Think of the East Harlem section. It boasts footbridges connecting to Randall’s and Wards Islands. It’s also slated for a major renovation. Millions of dollars have been allocated to improve this part of the Esplanade. They plan to add open spaces and recreation facilities.

On the Upper East Side the Esplanade offers stunning views. It overlooks Hell Gate and Wards Island. Near the Queensboro Bridge it weaves through Carl Schurz Park. A long ramp replaced a staircase here in 2017 improving accessibility.

In Midtown the Esplanade faces the United Nations Headquarters. This section features a unique challenge. There’s a gap in the greenway that’s been gradually filled in. It will eventually boast an amphitheater and a floating pier. The completion is expected in 2028.

Further south near Murray Hill and Kips Bay lies East River Esplanade Park. This park is a testament to persistence. It took two years and approvals from fourteen agencies to build it. It opened in 1992 alongside a new condominium building.

Continuing south the Esplanade passes Stuyvesant Cove Park. This park was built on a former brownfield site a testament to urban renewal. It has recently undergone reconstruction to strengthen it against floods.

Finally the Esplanade ends at the East River Waterfront Project. This section boasts rebuilt piers and glass pavilions under the FDR Drive. It’s a symbol of the city’s ongoing commitment to its waterfront. The Esplanade in all its sections is a testament to New York City’s enduring spirit. It is a place where history urban planning and community efforts blend. This is a true New York experience.
