Envision this. You’re standing before two historic buildings. These buildings make up the Lympia cultural center. It stands as a testament to Nice’s vibrant history.

The Lympia cultural center consists of two buildings. One is the former prison. It was built in 1750. The other is the Pavillon de l’Horloge. Construction of this building finished in 1826. Since 2017, it has hosted temporary exhibitions.

Imagine prisoners once occupied this space. Now, art and culture thrive here. It’s quite a transformation. The Alpes-Maritimes Department restored it. They upgraded the buildings to modern standards.

The Lympia cultural space has a privileged location. Its vast terrace offers exceptional views. It overlooks the port. The terrace dominates the area. Take a moment to appreciate the view.

The quality of the temporary exhibitions is excellent. The exhibitions are diverse. This makes the space an original player. It contributes to the cultural landscape. The Lympia is innovative.

Let’s delve deeper into its history. The building started as a defensive mole. Sardinian monarchy built the port starting in 1749. It was completed in 1750. It served as storage and a workshop. These were for port work. The large vaulted rooms facilitated this.

During the French occupation, it became a prison. This was for military deserters. Later, it became an annex to the Villefranche prison.

Convicts worked on expanding the port. They also maintained it. Conditions improved over time for prisoners. Also improved were conditions for their guards.

In 1826, the Pavillon de l’Horloge was built. It featured a clock tower. Penal functions ceased in 1887. The buildings then served administrative purposes.

Now, restored, the buildings are open for exhibitions. The Lympia benefits from the lively port area. The Place Ile de Beaute is nearby.

The Lympia cultural center has three cultural venues. There is a gallery. The gallery hosts diverse exhibitions. It covers about 250 square meters. It meets accessibility standards. It also protects the artwork.

The Pavillon de l’Horloge has three floors. The ground floor has two rooms. The upper floors have administrative services. One room is dedicated to multimedia.

The terrace covers the gallery. Its location on the port is exceptional. It can host monumental works. It can host specific events. Vernissages happen here. It can also be privatized.

The Lympia is open every day except Monday and Tuesday. It is open from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission is free.

As you leave the Espace Lympia, consider its journey. From prison to cultural hub, it stands as a beacon of transformation. It enriches Nice’s cultural landscape. Take one last look at the exceptional view from the terrace.
