Standing here, on the Puig de Sant Miquel hill, the Església de Sant Miquel has stood watch for centuries. You feel a sense of history washing over you, don’t you? This isn’t just any church. The Església de Sant Miquel is one of the oldest churches on Ibiza. It’s a fortress church, built to defend against pirate attacks. Imagine the fear that must have gripped the villagers when those sails appeared on the horizon. The church dates back to the 13th or 14th century. Unlike the typical churches on Ibiza, this one has a unique cross shape. It’s formed by two perpendicular bodies, making it one of the largest churches on the island. Look closely at the main nave. It stretches from east to west, with a grand altar at one end and a sturdy door on the south wall, specifically for men. The other nave, running north to south, boasts a beautiful vaulted ceiling and a separate entrance for women. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by the cool, hushed interior. Imagine the echoes of prayers and hymns that once filled this space. Each detail, from the vaulted ceilings to the numerous chapels, speaks of a time when faith was a refuge and a stronghold. And on summer Thursdays, the patio outside comes alive with the vibrant rhythms of “ball pagès,” Ibiza’s traditional dance. So, as you admire the Església de Sant Miquel, remember it as more than just stones and mortar. It’s a testament to the island’s resilience, faith, and enduring spirit.
