This unassuming church in the town of Jesús is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living link to Ibiza’s past a silent observer of centuries of island life. Built by Franciscan monks at the end of the 15th century it initially served the fishermen who lived outside Ibiza town’s walls. The Església de Jesús wasn’t just a simple structure. It evolved over time. Later additions and renovations shaped its present form. It’s a story etched in stone and wood reflecting the island’s own dynamic history. It was later given over to the Dominicans in 1580 only to be abandoned seven years later due to the threat of pirates. One can only imagine the fear that forced these monks to flee. The church’s quiet strength however remained.
Inside the Església de Jesús a true treasure awaits. A magnificent altarpiece a masterpiece of the international Gothic-Renaissance style. Painted by the Valencian artists Rodrigo de Osona and his sons it’s considered one of the most beautiful examples of medieval iconography in Spain. The church itself is rather simple. It has a single nave covered by a semi-circular vault. Six small chapels line its sides adding to its intimate atmosphere. Notice the side porch a classic architectural feature that speaks volumes of traditional craftsmanship. Two steps lead up to the porch its four exterior arcades opening to the sunlit square.
