Ankara’s Keçiören district holds a story not just in its streets but in its structures. Today that structure is Esertepe Yeni Camii. The Esertepe Yeni Camii is more than just a mosque. It’s a testament to community spirit and architectural ingenuity.

Its construction began in 2011. It took eleven years to complete. This wasn’t just about laying bricks. It was about overcoming challenges and fulfilling a community’s dream.

Now look closely at the Esertepe Yeni Camii. Notice how one side seems to rise six stories. The other appears as just two floors. This is due to the area’s natural slope. This difference led to some initial confusion. Some people wondered if a mosque had been built on top of an apartment building.

But the truth is far more interesting. The project started as a residential Quran course. Over time it evolved into a combination of both a mosque and a Quran course. The land belonged to National Property. There was an older smaller mosque there before.

The ground and first floors serve as the mosque. The upper floors house the Quran course. This design cleverly uses the available space.

The Esertepe Yeni Camii finally opened its doors in 2022. Locals were delighted. For years they had watched the construction. The hilly terrain made it difficult for some to reach other mosques. This new mosque provided easy access for worship.

Inside you’ll find a women’s section. There are also residences for religious officials and ablution areas. An elevator makes the mosque accessible to all. Even rented storage spaces contribute to the mosque’s upkeep.

The unique design attracted attention. Many community groups wanted to use the mosque’s facilities. The mosque association resisted these attempts. They were determined to keep the mosque open to everyone.

The Esertepe Yeni Camii faced financial difficulties during construction. It still owes one million TL. The mosque relied entirely on donations from benevolent individuals.

Interestingly the mosque committee asked the municipality to exchange parcels with the adjacent Martyr Infantry Sergeant İbrahim Bektaş Park. The park offered a flatter ground. Access to the mosque would have been easier. The municipality rejected this request.

Even after completion challenges remained. A power transformer stood in the middle of the staircase. It posed a safety hazard. It also blocked access to the Şehit Bayram Uluer Quran Course. The community is appealing to authorities to remove it.

Back in 2016 the prominent journalist Ahmet Hakan discussed the Esertepe Yeni Camii in his column. He shared a statement from the Presidency of Religious Affairs. The statement clarified that the old mosque was inadequate. The new project was approved by the Keçiören Governorship and Municipality. The design cleverly incorporated both a mosque and a Quran course.

The Esertepe Yeni Camii stands as a symbol of resilience. It reflects architectural innovation and community collaboration. It reminds us that sometimes the most remarkable stories are found in the most unexpected places.
