Gazing at the imposing structure before us, one can’t help but feel a sense of awe. This is the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos. The oldest and largest of the Spanish Technical Universities. The Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos, often referred to as ETSICCP, holds a rich and fascinating history. Founded in 1802, it stands as a testament to Spain’s engineering prowess, predating even the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), of which it is now a part. Originally established as the Escuela de Ingenieros de Caminos y Canales, the school has seen numerous transformations throughout its existence.

The ETSICCP’s journey began in the Palacio del Buen Retiro, a beautiful and historic setting. Its inaugural class in 1802, saw five eager students embark on their engineering journey. However, the Napoleonic invasion brought a temporary halt to their studies. In 1808, war forced the school’s closure and led to the destruction of its initial home. After a period of inactivity, the school reopened in 1820, only to be closed again in 1823 due to political turmoil. It wasn’t until 1834 that the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos found a stable footing. It added “Puertos” (ports) to its name and expanded its curriculum to encompass this crucial aspect of infrastructure. In 1836, the Cuerpo de Ingenieros de Caminos y Canales, a prestigious body of civil engineers, established its first official regulations, further solidifying the school’s importance.

Over the years, the school moved from the Aduana Vieja to a palacete on Calle del Turco before finally settling in its current location in the Ciudad Universitaria in 1969. Today, the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos offers Bachelor and Master’s programs in Civil Engineering and Materials Engineering. It even offers courses in English for international students. The school is known for its academic rigor, with Bachelor students primarily taking courses at the Bachelor level. Master’s students have more flexibility, being able to choose courses from Master’s programs or the 4th year of Bachelor programs. Interestingly, the school permits students to take up to 25% of their coursework at different schools within UPM, though this requires approvals and careful scheduling to avoid conflicts. Beyond the academics, the ETSICCP fosters a vibrant student community. As part of UPM, which has over 40,000 students and more than 200 clubs and associations, there’s always something happening. Madrid, a city rich in culture and history, provides a vibrant backdrop for student life.

The Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos, stands as a symbol of Spain’s commitment to engineering excellence. From its humble beginnings in the early 19th century to its present-day stature, it has played a vital role in shaping the nation’s infrastructure. As you continue to admire its facade, remember the countless engineers who have walked these halls before you. Their contributions have shaped not only Spain’s landscape but also the world of civil engineering.
