“Is it really just a school?” you might wonder, gazing at the Escola Secundária Eça de Queirós. This is no ordinary secondary school. It’s an institution steeped in history. It has shaped the minds of countless students since its founding in 1904.
Initially, the municipal council wanted to create the lyceum of Póvoa de Varzim. The Instituto de Instrução Primária could not satisfy its objectives. The government approved the Liceu Nacional da Póvoa de Varzim on July 14th. This was before any building existed. The school moved between different buildings.
From 1912 to 1914, it resided in the former Colégio das Doroteias. Between 1914 and 1916, the school moved to the Colégio Povoense. It then changed its name to Liceu Nacional Eça de Queirós. Between 1916 and 1925, it occupied a building owned by the Silveira Campos family. Sadly, they had to leave because the building was collapsing. From 1925 to 1952, the school was housed in the deactivated Fábrica do Gás.
A formal building was finally decreed on November 24, 1945. Land selection and expropriation began. Urban issues were debated. In 1947, the school became the Liceu Nacional da Póvoa de Varzim. Construction began in April 1949. The Junta das Construções para o Ensino Técnico e Secundário oversaw the project. The building was expected to be finished by the end of 1951. It was inaugurated on October 18, 1952.
The Escola Secundária Eça de Queirós expanded between 1960 and 1961. Fourteen halls were added. Two were for design and manual work. One hall became a girl’s gymnasium. By 1961–1963, further expansion was needed. Between 1962 and 1963, three more classrooms were built. A covered recreational space and bathrooms were also added. In 1979, the school officially became the Escola Secundária Eça de Queirós.
The Escola Secundária Eça de Queirós occupies an entire block. It is bordered by Rua Dr. Alberto Pimentel, Rua Padre Afonso Soares, Rua de Camilo, and Rua Dr. Leonardo Coimbra. Nearby, you’ll find the Escola Primária da Póvoa de Varzim and the Basílica do Sagrado Coração de Jesus.
The school’s rectangular building has two floors. Four wings interconnect. They create an uncovered interior patio. An “L-shaped” extension is on the left side. The facades are beige. Granite details adorn the building. The main facade faces southeast. It features granite wedges and parapets.
The Secondary School Eça de Queirós stands as a testament to Póvoa de Varzim’s commitment to education. It has evolved over the years. It continues to inspire future generations.
