Curiosity stirred within me as I approached the imposing structure of ESAMI. What secrets did these walls hold? Here in Arusha, Tanzania, ESAMI stands as a testament to African collaboration and progress. The Eastern and Southern African Management Institute, or ESAMI, isn’t just a building. It is a beacon of management development, a hub where the future leaders of Africa are forged. ESAMI was founded in 1979, rising from the foundation of the East African Management Institute. Its creation was a joint effort, a partnership between the governments of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. They envisioned an institution that would provide top-tier management training, research, and consultancy services. The institute’s reach quickly extended beyond its founding members. The charter, signed in October 1979, included Mozambique, Malawi, Namibia, Seychelles, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, and it was endorsed by the UN Economic Commission for Africa. ESAMI’s impact is undeniable. It offers a diverse range of programs, from Master of Business Administration degrees specializing in areas like human resource management and transport economics, to diplomas in management and administration. ESAMI is not confined to its headquarters in Arusha. It extends its influence through study centers across the region, bringing its expertise closer to those who seek it. In a significant acknowledgement of its contribution, the UN Economic Commission for Africa designated ESAMI as “The African Centre of Excellence in Management Development” in May 1997. ESAMI is more than an institute. It represents a collaborative spirit, a drive for excellence, and a vision for a stronger, more efficiently managed Africa.
