Can you imagine standing in front of a monument dedicated to a military hero, a man who fought off the French Revolutionaries? The Erzherzog-Karl-Denkmal, right here in the Siebentischwald forest, was built to honor none other than Archduke Charles of Austria.

The Denkmal is an impressive classical monument. It was built in 1802, just a few short years after Archduke Charles had helped defend the city from Napoleon’s troops. The city of Augsburg was eager to immortalize his contributions to the region.

Archduke Charles was a skilled military leader, a strategist who led Austrian troops against the French. He was known for his victories, especially in the battles of 1796 and 1799. In fact, the inscription on the Denkmal, “To the victor over the French Revolutionary Armies 1796-1799,” celebrates his greatest achievements.

However, the Denkmal also tells a story of change and forgetfulness. Although the monument was built to commemorate Archduke Charles’s victories, it was later rebuilt with the inscription altered. The inscription once read “To the savior of the Germans, by some Germans,” but after Austria separated from the German Reich, the reference to being German was omitted.

The Denkmal stands on a small hill, surrounded by a forest. It’s a beautiful location, quiet and peaceful. The monument is constructed from tuff stone and features a rectangular base decorated with lion heads. Four columns support a dome with a bust of the Archduke, wearing armor.

The monument has been vandalized and restored several times. The original bust was replaced, and the original inscription was changed, but the Denkmal still stands as a testimony to the courage and skill of a remarkable military leader. It reminds us of the turbulent times, the struggles for freedom, and the enduring legacy of those who fought for them.
