Step inside the peaceful tranquility of Eryuzan Jizoin Temple. This small temple, tucked away in Arashiyama, is a sanctuary from the bustling crowds of Kyoto. Founded in 1367 by Hosokawa Yoriyuki, a samurai and close ally of the powerful Ashikaga shogun, Eryuzan Jizoin Temple was built as a temple of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. Unfortunately, like many other temples in Kyoto, it was ravaged by fires during the Onin War (1467-77), but was rebuilt during the Edo period.

The temple is called the Bamboo Temple or Take-no-tera. A dense bamboo grove surrounds it. As you walk through the grove, you’ll feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over you. The sound of the wind rustling through the bamboo is almost hypnotic. The grove leads to a simple and refined main hall. This is the heart of Eryuzan Jizoin Temple.

In the main hall, you can see the small Zen garden, a beautiful and intricate space that represents Buddha’s sixteen disciples. It’s a perfect spot to sit and contemplate. The garden’s serenity contrasts with the energy of the bamboo grove outside. Although Eryuzan Jizoin Temple is dedicated to the Jizo Bodhisattva, who is known to protect and guide the weak, there are only a few Jizo sculptures. The temple’s main attraction is its peaceful atmosphere and serene garden.

Eryuzan Jizoin Temple might be small but, like a little gem, it is well worth the visit.
