Hidden within the Pearl River, Ersha Island whispers tales of transformation. Ersha Island was once known as Napier Island. It served as a strategic military point. British forces occupied Napier’s Fort during the First Opium War. The Chinese later reinforced the fort, adding three more nearby. These became known as the Barrier Forts, guarding the approach to Guangzhou. The British seized these forts again in the Second Opium War. Later, American forces recaptured them in the Battle of the Barrier Forts in 1856. Ersha Island has evolved from a military stronghold into a vibrant cultural hub. Today, Ersha Island is home to the Guangdong Museum of Art and the Xinghai Concert Hall. Art enthusiasts can explore diverse collections at the museum. Music lovers can enjoy performances in the stunning concert hall, shaped like a swan on the riverbank. It’s named after the famous composer Xian Xinghai, a Guangzhou native. Several parks dot the island, offering tranquil escapes. Chuanqi Park, Hong Cheng Park, Ershadao Sports Park, and Guangzhou Fazhan Park provide green spaces for relaxation. Ersha Island also boasts sports facilities. These include the Ershadao Sports Park, Guangdong Badminton Stadium, and the Guangdong Swimming Association’s facilities. This makes the island a training ground for athletes. The American International School of Guangzhou’s elementary campus is also located here. Ersha Island stands as a testament to Guangzhou’s ever-changing landscape. From a fort to a cultural center, Ersha Island embodies the city’s dynamism.
