In the heart of northern France, nestled along the tranquil Lys River, lies the charming commune of Erquinghem-Lys. Erquinghem-Lys whispers tales of Vikings, sieges, and resilience. Our journey begins in the 9th century, when Viking longboats sailed up the Lys, disrupting the peace of this small village. Erquinghem-Lys, like many settlements along the river, fell victim to these raids. Fast forward to 1214. Ferrand of Flanders dared to defy King Philip II Augustus of France. The king’s retribution was swift and decisive. He ordered the destruction of the castle at Erquinghem-Lys, a stark reminder of his authority. Centuries later, in 1647, Erquinghem-Lys found itself at the heart of conflict again. Luis de Benavides Carrillo, a Spanish military leader, established his headquarters here during the siege of nearby Armentières. This strategic location played a significant role in the ongoing power struggles of the time. Erquinghem-Lys officially became part of France in 1668, marking a new chapter in its history. But the echoes of its Flemish past still resonate. The town’s name itself, “Erkegem an de Leie” in West Flemish, points to these roots. Today, Erquinghem-Lys stands as a testament to its enduring spirit. The modern town cherishes its history. You can explore the remnants of its feudal past at the motte féodale du Château. This site, listed as a historical monument, offers glimpses into a bygone era. The church of Saint-Martin, a “true jewel of art” as described by locals, also beckons. Rebuilt in 1923 after wartime destruction, it boasts soaring gothic architecture and a towering spire reaching over 47 meters. Inside, you’ll find baptismal fonts dating back to 1567, silent witnesses to the religious upheavals of the past. Erquinghem-Lys even houses a local history museum, preserving the stories and artifacts of its rich heritage. As you stroll through the town, take a moment to appreciate the tranquil beauty of the Lys River. Imagine Viking ships navigating its waters, soldiers marching through its streets, and the daily lives of the people who have called Erquinghem-Lys home for centuries. Their stories, woven into the fabric of this charming commune, are waiting to be discovered.
