Have you ever stopped to think about the history of the people whose faces you see around the city? You are standing right in front of the Ernst-Thälmann-Büste Sculpture in Frankfurt (Oder), a bronze bust of a man whose life embodies courage and resilience. Ernst Thälmann was a German communist politician who was imprisoned by the Nazis in 1933 and later executed in 1944. This sculpture is a poignant reminder of the struggles for social justice and the sacrifices made for a brighter future. It was created by Walter Kreisel, a local artist, and was dedicated in 1986 on the 100th anniversary of Thälmann’s birth. It stands on a plot of land where Otto Strahl, the city’s first elected mayor, was buried. The sculpture was moved twice in the 1990s, reflecting the changes in the political and social landscape of the city. Today, it serves as a site of remembrance for the many individuals who fought for social equality and justice in a turbulent time.
