A wave of devotion washes over you as you stand before the Ermita del Santísimo Cristo de los Remedios. This unassuming chapel holds centuries of faith and resilience. Its story begins not with grand architecture but with the profound devotion of the people of San Sebastián de los Reyes.

The Ermita del Santísimo Cristo de los Remedios isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to enduring faith. Its origins are intertwined with the Church of San Sebastián Mártir. A deep devotion to a crucified Jesus Christ existed from the church’s earliest days. Records show a “Large Christ” or “Christ of the Chapter” from at least 1570. A brotherhood called the “Chapter of the True Cross” existed by 1564. This penitential confraternity revered this very Christ.

But the devotion to the Santísimo Cristo de los Remedios solidified in 1645. This is when wills and bequests first mention this specific Christ. A testament from Josep G. Bravo in 1645 names a “Brotherhood of the Most Holy Christ of the Remedies.” Another just two months later further cemented the devotion.

Why “los Remedios” Remedies? The name reflects a dark period. Between 1599 and 1650 San Sebastián de los Reyes suffered greatly. The plague of 1599 alone wiped out 40% of the population. Further hardships from poor harvests and epidemics added to the despair. The name evokes the seeking of solace and remedy from the suffering and hardship endured.

The people of San Sebastián de los Reyes sought spiritual comfort. Around the same time devotion to Our Lady of Help also arose in the hermitage of San Roque. In 1755 a preserved engraving depicts the Christ of Remedies with an ancient symbol. A serpent raised on a pole by Moses. This is a symbol of healing mirroring a similar symbol in the Gospel of John. This ancient symbol of healing and resurrection continues to this day. It’s embodied in the scepters of the Brotherhood’s Senior Brothers.

In 1648 the city council of San Sebastián de los Reyes funded a novena a nine-day period of prayer and devotion to the Santísimo Cristo de los Remedios. This was done due to water shortages. This novena was repeated in 1650 1651 and later years. It shows the profound impact the Santísimo Cristo de los Remedios had on the community.

The Ermita del Santísimo Cristo de los Remedios stands as a silent witness. It embodies the faith resilience and hope of a community. It’s a place where history faith and devotion intertwine. A true testament to the enduring power of the human spirit. A place of healing and solace for centuries. A treasure of Madrid.
