“Can a place whisper secrets?” I ask, gesturing towards the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. “This sanctuary, perched on Puntallana in La Gomera, certainly does.” The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe isn’t just a beautiful church. It’s a keeper of tales, a testament to faith, and a focal point of island life. Founded in 1542 by Guillén Peraza de Alaya y Bobadilla, the first Count of La Gomera, the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe holds the revered image of the island’s patron saint, the Virgen de Guadalupe. The church’s unique T-shaped floor plan sets it apart from other religious structures on the island. A single nave leads to the presbytery, which opens into three quadrilateral chapels. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe shares architectural elements with the Ermita de San Sebastián, another important church dedicated to the historical patron saint of the island. In the 19th century, significant renovations expanded the sanctuary. Five varas were added to the head of the church. The traditional “losa chasnera” stone paves the floor, and from outside, the majestic Teide volcano on Tenerife dominates the view. The small size of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, holding only about 40 people, adds to its intimacy. Inside, a beautiful altarpiece frames the small wooden statue of the Virgen de Guadalupe, affectionately known as “La Morenita de Puntallana”. The 25-centimeter tall statue embodies the islanders’ devotion. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe saw further restoration in 2008. The roof, interior, and surrounding area were all improved. A niche was created to safeguard the patron saint’s image. Illegal shacks near the sanctuary were removed, returning the area to its tranquil beauty. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe isn’t just a static monument. It’s the heart of a vibrant tradition, the Bajada de la Virgen. Every five years, the statue of the Virgen de Guadalupe journeys from Puntallana to San Sebastián by sea. This procession, witnessed by crowds of faithful and curious onlookers, fills the island with celebration. Even when it’s not a Bajada year, the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe draws pilgrims every first Sunday of the month for a special mass honoring the patron saint. The Fiesta de Octubre, held annually, also sees islanders making their way to Puntallana for a procession around the sanctuary. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe stands as a symbol of La Gomera’s history and faith, whispering its secrets to all who listen.
